This girl's prank at work on her best friend went viral, but her employers were pissed

When it comes to mixing your work life with your social life, there are three basic golden rules:

1. Don't do it

2. Don't do it

3. Don't do it

Of course, it's fine to have a drink after work with some of your closest co-workers, and there's no rule saying that you can't invite the people from the adjacent desk to your birthday party next month, but - please - don't bunk off work and then accidentally tag your boss in a picture of you sipping a cocktail at the beach. Just don't.

Last week, the young woman posted a clip of herself having fun with her work bestie - and it quickly went viral. The 13-second clip, which was titled, "Perks of having the same job as your best friend", showed Delilah (who goes by the name "Dee" on Twitter) and her pal messing around in the parking lot of the Target where they worked.

In a very short space of time, it garnered more than 5,000 retweets and almost 30,000 likes - and the clip itself has amassed more than 4.6 million views.

It also prompted a wave of memes, with people screenshotting the last frame of the video and captioning it with the classic "me" variations.

Dee then went on to share the Snapchat clip of her friend's perspective, which is exactly as entertaining as you'd expect it to be:

Unfortunately for the pair, somewhere amongst those millions of video hits on the original clip must have been one of Dee's employers; or someone who works for Target, at least. How do we know this? Well, because this is what happened next...

Surprise, surprise: it turns out that Target isn't a big fan of having their brand undermined by two young employees playing around on their shift. If they'd performed the stunt after clocking out, when neither of them were in uniform, then the whole mess probably wouldn't have happened.

This is why you follow the three golden rules, people.

Anyway, the second tweet then went even more viral than the first one, amassing (at the time of writing) 88,000 retweets and 340,000 likes.

Many Twitter users were sympathetic to Dee's newly-established state of unemployment - with former co-workers and friends leaving comments on the post to say they were sorry about what happened and that they missed her.

Others, however, were not as understanding about the situation:

There was one slightly heartwarming piece of news to come from all this, however, and it's that Dee and her partner-in-crime are still on the best of terms.

So, if you're planning on putting your bestie in a trolley and jettisoning them across a parking lot (or photocopying your butt, or building a box fort, or any other equivalent available in your workplace), just make sure you know who's going to see it, first.
