There's little Amy Schumer can't do; she's either starring in some blockbuster, making us clutch our sides in hysterics, or being outspoken about whatever political monstrosity is currently occurring in the United States. But no matter what she does, and how much acclaim she receives, the haters promptly follow suit.
Case in point: the comedian officially returned to the stage just two weeks after giving birth, because you know, mothers are superheroes. Some, however, didn't seem to agree and proceeded to mom-shame her.
Amy took to Instagram to mark the occasion, simply writing "I’m back!".
While plenty of mothers praised her for returning to work so quickly after giving birth to baby Gene - and for enduring a pregnancy that was fraught with complications including hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes severe vomiting, nausea and dehydration - the mom-shamers quickly came out in full force.
"Jesus, Amy. Let the stitches dissolve first," wrote one Instagram user, and another added "Already???? That’s insane!!! And inhumane."
"Contract or not you need to be allowed at least 6 weeks for maternity," wrote a third.
Another chimed in, "Like, I can still smell your placenta…take a damn break ffs."
I mean, can we just not?
The 37-year-old welcomed Gene with her husband, Chris Fischer, on the 5th May. And since then, she's been sharing some seriously candid snaps. In a recent post, she spoke about her labour and her experience of having a doula in the birthing room.
"Ok here’s my post baby annoying post and my takeaway from pregnancy. Women are the shit. Men are cool and whatever but women are fucking warriors and capable of anything," she began.
"I was lucky enough to get to have a doula. Her name @domino_kirke @carriagehousebirthwhat do doulas do? I don’t totally know [sic] But what she did was make me and Chris feel totally secure and supported throughout my pregnancy and the birth process. I really recommend getting one if you can.
Doctor Brill and all the nurses and pediatricians at Lenox Hill and all the other hospitals i spent time in this year, thank you for everything. I did Pilates with strong women and went for walks. I threw up violently and felt sick mostly every day of my pregnancy. Hyperemesis is real and it’s awful. But f*ck, what they say is true. The second you give birth it’s gone [sic].
"@hgmoms has the best research I found on the condition The only thing that helped me with my nausea was products from @thelordjones I learned that globally 1 in 5 births take place without the assistance of a skilled birth attendant. @everymomcounts is a great place to donate $250 equips a midwife with a bag of medical equipment needed to provide care to hundreds of women and babies in Guatemala. All my friends. Friends I’ve had for 30 years or people who encouraged me to “keep going” or telling me “it will be worth it”. Thank you. Every woman I encountered is so willing to help and advise you and I felt all their strength. And you were right. Thank you ladies from my family [sic]."
