Cardi B hits back at the haters calling her pregnancy 'career suicide'

It's been a big week for Cardi B. The Bronx rapper who shot to fame in an incredibly short amount of time dropped her highly-anticipated album, Invasion of Privacy, on Friday, and it's since achieved acclaim. Her debut album is already gold-certified, her single Bartier Cardi officially went platinum, and the likes of Sam Smith, 50 Cent and Oprah have been showing their love for the new album.

On top of that, the 25-year-old revealed on Saturday Night Live that she was pregnant with fiancée Offset, as has been rumoured for a little while. She performed onstage in a tight white gown which showed off her baby bump, and it's said that she will give birth towards the end of summer this year.

But while fans have been gushing to the Bodak Yellow star with congratulatory messages, it seems not everyone feels that the pregnancy announcement is such good news.

In a recent radio interview on Hot 97's Ebro in the Morning, the star revealed that it wasn't something that she and Offset planned, but admitted they are both excited to have a child together. "No, it wasn’t planned," she laughed. "It was just one night… it was a good night. That one night, it had to be that night."

However, some fans have said that Cardi's pregnancy couldn't come at a worse time now that she is breaking into what seems to be the beginning of a peak in her career. Some have even gone so far as to call it "career suicide".

Cardi addressed the sudden surge of hate from people during the interview, pointing out that Offset (who is part of Migos and already has three kids from earlier relationships, btw) isn't getting the same backlash. "Why can't women do both?" Cardi asked, frustrated.

"It's so annoying to me," she said of the comments she received online. "And the thing I hated the most was that it was mostly women talking about 'I feel sorry for her, her career is over.'"

Cardi explained that if anything, the baby would encourage her to work harder: "What do you mean my career is over? I mean now I'm more hungry. Like you think I'm going to give up now that I'm going to have to feed me and my child? Negative."

"As a woman, why can’t I have both? Why do I gotta choose a career or a baby? I want both," she said. Which – as any full-time working mother can tell you – is hardly impossible. However, it seems that the old rhetoric that your personal ambitions are scrapped when you have kids lives on in the minds of some people.

"You know, I'm getting married," the breakout rapper went on. "Everybody wants to joke around, 'Oh you're the fourth baby mama,' this, this and that, but I'm getting married. And even though so, let's say God forbid we don't, my man is a great father to his kids, so I will never lose. I'm not having a baby with a deadbeat."

She and Offset reportedly have already chosen a name for the baby, but she didn't reveal whether it was a boy or a girl. Nevertheless – congratulations Cardi, and we can't wait to see what you do next.
