Meghan Markle always wears shoes that are too big for her – here's why

Now that Meghan Markle has been flung into the public eye with more force than ever before (royalists are some of the most beady-eyed and gossip thirsty people among us), there's nothing the 36-year-old newlywed can't hide.

The latest thing people have noticed is something odd about her footwear choices. It's a known fact that it's part of royal protocol for the ladies to wear high heels – stilettos and pumps, but please no wedges (a rule that Kate Middleton has broken on a number of occasions).

And while Meghan continues to nail outfit after outfit with her new title of Duchess of Sussex, fans have started pointing to her feet and wondering why her shoes never seem to fit. Sure enough, if you look closely, you'll notice that Meghan's shoes always seem to be a size or two too big.

It's not that the palace doesn't have a budget and relies on hand-me-downs (pfft, as if) or that Meghan has an incompetent stylist who always orders the wrong size. No, it's on purpose, and it's for a very good reason indeed. Fashion expert Harriet Davey spoke to The Sun about why it is that Meghan might choose to wear shoes that are too big for her.

"Celebs often go a size up, or even two, in the shoe department when they're at an event or on the red carpet and it's for one reason we can all relate to — to avoid blisters," she said.

"There's nothing worse than uncomfortable shoes (we've all been there on a night out) and when celebs like Meghan are wearing heels for a long period of time their feet can often swell up," Harriet went on. "The swelling can cause blisters and in the long run bunions — like long-time heel fan Victoria Beckham has been rumoured to suffer with."

And if you're wondering why celebs don't trip on the red carpet if most of them are wearing a size up, there's a reason for that too.

"A trick of the trade is to stuff the toe with padding like tissue or cotton wool, and this can be taken out once they feel like they need a bit more room in their shoes," Harriet said.

And it seems that other celebs have their own secrets about how to stay comfortable while wearing heels. Margot Robbie uses a special foot spray that cools her feet and stops swelling thanks to its menthol component.

But perhaps, if you're like the Duchess of Sussex, there are ways to make sure you can glide around in your heels all day long. Thanks for the tip, Meghan!
